From replacing a television to enjoying cinema on board
Replacing a television can seem straightforward until it needs to fit the cabinetry, use an adapted mount or remain connected to the rest of the system. I help you choose a screen suited to the space and how you use it, and take care of its installation and integration.
I also work with cinema and surround-sound systems, amplification and subwoofers. I have installed video and audio systems in small craft and boats up to around 30 metres: each space calls for a different solution.
First, what music do you enjoy, and how?
I would not propose the same system for a couple enjoying background music at a quiet anchorage as for a boat hosting DJ parties with house or techno. I want to know what you listen to, where, at what volume and what you expect from the sound: clarity, bass, balance or sound pressure.
The brand comes after that. I work with equipment from JL Audio, Fusion, Bose, Denon, Sonos and Yamaha, among others, depending on the project. If you have a particular preference, we start there and assess how it can work on your boat. The proposal is not restricted to a fixed catalogue.
The difference you cannot see: the speaker enclosure
Where the space and speaker allow it, I consider a dedicated acoustic enclosure behind the headlining or bulkhead. From outside, the installation may look the same, but the enclosure contributes to the result: I aim for weight and definition in the bass and lower midrange while controlling unwanted resonances.
This is also where my 3D design and fabrication work comes in. I can create enclosures tailored to the available space and speaker, using carbon-fibre-reinforced materials where appropriate. Volume, geometry, rigidity and sealing are considered for that particular installation. There is more to it than cutting a hole and fitting a speaker.
Simple control and music across different zones
In many projects, a phone is the everyday controller, especially outside. A dedicated remote may still make sense indoors. I plan control around ease of use, whether you want the same music in several zones or different music in each.
I assess Bluetooth or the local network according to the equipment and intended use. For multiroom systems, I generally prefer the boat’s network, using Wi-Fi or wired connections as appropriate. I also check coverage and network performance: the experience depends on both the audio equipment and the network connecting it.
An installation built for life on a boat
The power supply is planned alongside the audio system. Depending on the project, AC amplifiers supplied through an inverter may make sense, or compact 12 or 24 V DC equipment may be more suitable. I review consumption, available voltages and the installation’s capacity before choosing.
I pay attention to speaker orientation, cabling, heat dissipation and protection from water and moisture, including the sealing and watertightness each location requires. These details are less visible than the equipment brand, but they are part of a properly considered installation.
Audio experience that began before marine electronics
Before moving into marine electronics, I prepared car audio systems, including systems for sound competitions. That gave me experience combining sound quality and sound pressure, and still informs how I customise and tune onboard audio.
